When captain cook and his sailors first visited the Australian continent, they were said to have used the leaves the leaves of this tree to make a refreshing hot drink. Whether or not they liked the brew is uncertain, but the tree has kept the name they gave it. Over the centuries the indigenous aborigines have used tea tree poultices to cleanse and heal wounds and ulcers. Today it is grown commercially for its oil along the central and northern coasts of new South Wales.
